Tom Brady Interview: "There Has to Be More Than This"

This is a revealing "60 Minutes" interview of Tom Brady, where he reflects on his massive success and fame, but laments, "There has to be more than this." When the interviewer asks what it is, Brady replies, "I wish I knew." So, regardless of who wins tonight's Super Bowl, there will be something more. The victory will not fulfill or satisfy ultimately. Tomorrow will dawn and the ache in the soul will remain. It is an ache that can only be satisfied by the gospel, where we look not to our own success and glory, but the success and glory of another. It is when we finally begin to understand the cross that we begin to finally experience that "something more."

What I Do is Not Who I Am

Last week in a press conference, UGA football coach Mark Richt provided a rich gospel perspective on his life and vocation:

“I love the game of football. I love my job. I love Georgia. But what I do is not who I am,” Richt said. “I think sometimes if we become what we do, and then things aren’t going just right, then all of a sudden our entire world falls apart. I’ve got a faith in my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, and I know that God loves me and is going to take care of me. I just truly believe that. When all the games are done and all of life is lived, I know where I’ll be for eternity.”

He is right. What I do, whether good or bad, does not define who I am. The imputed righteousness of Jesus defines who I am. I have been graced. I am a forgiven, beloved Son of the Father. That is who I am.

Eagles Win Big Game Over King's Ridge

Tonight the DCA Eagles, Schaeffer's middle school football team, defeated the previously number one team in the league, the King's Ridge Tigers, 12-6. The Eagles only had 15 players dressed out, and were missing thier leading rusher due to a collar bone fracture. The Tigers played with over 30 players and had a considerable physical size advantage. Great coaching, a well executed offense and tenacious defense sealed the victory. Now, DCA is in a three-way tie for first place as they enter the playoffs next week. Way to go Schaeffer (who is sporting a few butterfly bandages that are closing an open blunt force wound on his jaw) and all of the DCA Eagles!

Eagles Win Season Opener (Photos)

Schaeffer (#18) plays for the Dawson Christian Academy Eagle Middle School football team, a great group of friends and coaches (including Quincy Carter, former QB for Georgia and the Dallas Cowboys—how cool is that?!). Ann Ferris is an Eagle cheerleader. :) Tonight was their first game, a 31-6 victory over Dominion Christian. Way to go, Eagles!

Thoughts on a Comeback

Today Auburn pulled off what most have to admit was a remarkable comeback victory over Alabama. Down 24-0 in the second quarter, the Tigers walked away with a 28-27 win. Here are some reflections on how that game reveals a lot about the rest of life.

  1. When things look impossible, they aren't.
  2. Stick to what you do best. Don't play someone else's game.
  3. Don't panic, and don't give up.
  4. Setbacks are part of the game.
  5. It helps to have a hero.
  6. The best is yet to come.

Right now, I'm watching the Oregon Ducks play Arizona. Oregon is the team that Auburn likely will play if they defeat South Carolina next week in the SEC Championship game in Hotlanta. Oregon isn't in the SEC, but man, they look really, really good. Just for the sake of watching some good football, I'd love to see an Auburn and Oregon National Championship game.  Actually, I would like to see an Ole Miss versus anybody National Championship game. But that is unlikely in my lifetime. Maybe in my dreams. Good night. :)

Schaeffer's First Football Game

Schaeffer had his first full, non-scrimage football game on Saturday. He is #1. No, seriously, his jersey number is #1. But he did have a great game. Playing quarterback on many snaps, he had a beautiful pass completion (RARE in youth football), a touchdown saving tackle, and a 60 yard touchdown run (last week in the jamboree he had a 40 yd. TD). On one run he was slammed out of bounds and got the wind knocked out of him (thus the pic of him on his back on the sideline). Way to go, Schaeffer! Of course, football is a team sport. So way to go, Indians. We are rooting for you!
