“What will people think?” Are you ready to admit that this question drives most of what you do and how you live? What will they think about what I wear? What will they think about what I say? What will they think about what I post? What will they think if I don’t say, Yes? What will they think if I fail? The bottom line is that we crave approval and are always asking, even if subconsciously, “What will people think?”
Being driven by this question leads to over-commitment, to being controlled by peer pressure, to a dread of not meeting the expectations of others, and to a tendency to avoid people. This is what’s it’s like to live a prison of insecurity and a fear of the opinions of others, which, according to Ed Welch, makes “people big and God is small.” In other words, when we let other people determine our self-image and value, we make people our God.
But there is good news. We can be free from the fear of man, and I think that the message this week will help unshackle those chains. I can’t wait to share it with you!
