But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. (2 Corinthians 2:14 ESV)Notice how Paul was not merely thankful for his own personal salvation, but was thankful that he was part of God’s mission to spread the gospel to other grace-needy folks as the aroma of salvation is spread everywhere– not the scent of legalistic moralism or bland liberalism, but the robust fragrance of pure, undiluted, brand-name grace. It seeps out in how we speak to others, about others and about ourselves. Attitudes of humility, encouragement and thankfulness give it away. It is released through simple acts of kindness, unexpected generosity and sacrifice.
Of course, the fragrance is the aroma of Jesus “through us.” It is as we abide by faith in the Savior as our perfect righteousness, the Spirit fills us and perfumes our lives for the benefit of others, the glory of God and our joy.
This thanksgiving let us be grateful to be part of God’s global mission to spread a knowledge of God in the person of Jesus. It’s not about us; it’s about him. So, believe the gospel afresh and wear the cologne of grace.
Because grace changes everything!
