One of the biggest mistakes parents make is focusing on rules and obedience. As Elyse Fitzpatrick, author of Give Them Grace (the best book on parenting out there!), says, “One thing is for sure: we aren’t to give our children the law to make them good. It won’t, because it can’t.” Tullian Tchividjian agrees, saying, “The law shows us what a sanctified life looks like, but it does not have sanctifying power… the law directs us, but only the gospel can drive us.” Or in Elyse own words, “The only power strong enough to transform the selfishly rebellious and the selfishly self-righteous heart is grace.” To that I say, Amen!
So, as we explore what a distinctively grace-driven approach to parenting looks like, there will applications for everyone, regardless of age or parenting status. However, for those with kids or who will one day have them, I think this series will be revolutionary for you.
This Sunday we will begin by laying the foundation, which means that we will define the goal of Christian parenting. What we discover might cause you to rethink your parenting game plan in big ways. You will not want to miss it!
I’m pumped about this series and can’t wait to see you Sunday.
