Getting Close to God

Elyse Fitzpatrick, in Give Them Grace, says, “Jesus flipped everything in our quid pro quo world on its head. Instead of commending those who were outwardly good, he demeaned them and sent them back to school… Like most of us, they assumed that being important, grown up, responsible, and good were the ways to get close to God. They were wrong.”

How do we get close to God? As Jesus said, “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” Why? Because, in the words of Mrs. Fitzpatrick, “They have nothing to offer, nothing to give him… [the children] loved him because he had loved them.”

So today, I am invited to become a child. Dependent. Cared for. Treasured. Loved. Offering nothing. Receiving everything.
