My eldest daughter put together her resume this morning. As any resume, it lists skills, accomplishments and reasons why an prospective empolyer should hire her. However, a resume that we show the manager of a clothing store will differ substantially from the resume that we show to God for his approval. On that resume, I do not list my accomplishments, but the accomplishments of Jesus for me. I do not boast in my fulilling of the law, but in Jesus’ fulfilling of the law for me. I do not point to my righteousness, but the righteousness of Jesus imputed to me. For the resume of the gospel is the resume of Christ Jesus, himself—a resume of pure grace.
As the hymn, Rock of Ages, says so simply, but effectively:
Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die.
